  • Are you feeling lack of energy and depressed?

Posted on March 13, 2016 by Wendy

I found this great article from Elephant Journal about why there are such high
rates of depression, allergies and unexplained weight gain in people who live in the
Northern Hemisphere. It makes perfect sense and this winter I sure missed my Vitamin D.
All credit to this article goes to Elephant Journal.

Please remember you should always consult your doctor before taking anything to be on
    the safe side.

Here is a secret that doctors don’t always mention in regular check-ups: even a mild deficiency in vitamin D can be associated with depression, diabetes, allergies, asthma, certain cancers, and more.

A study in the journal of Neurology found that moderate to severe vitamin D deficiency in older adults may double the risk of some dementias. The relationship between vitamin D deficiency and many diseases is not surprising given that many body organs including the brain have receptors for vitamin D, and therefore are affected by it.

Here is the twist: vitamin D is actually a hormone that our bodies make. We used to think that its only role was to regulate calcium levels, but we now know that it does much more. Exactly how it is associated with these pathologies is still not clear.

Why would people who live in the Northern Hemisphere be at a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency? We only get about 10% of vitamin D from food, our bodies mostly make vitamin D by absorbing sunlight through the skin, then the kidney makes the active form of the vitamin. As we become more dependent on technology, we abandon the sun even more. Staying indoors means we get less sun, which contributes to vitamin D deficiency and increasing rates of depression. Adults at work in cubicles, children in air-conditioned classrooms and even animals in indoor cages.

We grow our food in a way that tends to deprive us of vitamins and other nutrients. For example, mushrooms are a good source of vitamin D, but since industrially they are grown in the dark, they are usually lacking in the vitamin.

Who is at risk? A “yes” answer to any or all the following might mean an increase in vitamin D intake is due: unexplained sadness, aching bones (sometimes confused for arthritis, but imaging and blood tests show no arthritis), allergies, unexplained weight gain, pre-diabetic, working night shifts, living in North America, living at high altitude, being dark skinned (the melanin in dark skin prevents maximal benefit from sunlight), or generally being a person that spends most of their time indoors.

What can be done about vitamin D deficiency? The first step is to ask the doctor to check our vitamin D levels, so we can decide on how aggressively to tackle it. Try to get some sunlight, about 30 min exposure to sun twice a week should be sufficient (of course watch out for skin cancer too). Add foods rich in vitamin D to your daily diet: fatty fish, canned tuna, mushrooms grown in sunlight, beef liver, cod liver oil (excellent source), egg yolk, fortified cereals, fortified milk and fortified juices.

Another option is to take vitamin D supplements—studies have shown that drops are more effective than tablets or capsules. The recommended dose will vary based on your age, location and symptoms, but it is generally acknowledged that even infants are safe taking up to 1000 IU/day.

  • Which body type are you?

Posted on February 10, 2016 by Wendy

See Where You’re Getting Fat and We’ll Tell You How to Fix It ( full credit to David Wolfe)

There are two types of body fat distribution: Android and Gynoid

    According to PositiveMed:

“An ‘android’ fat distribution pattern is so called because more men than women exhibit it.
You may have heard it described as an ‘apple’ body type when the waist circumference is greater than that of the hips.”

    and…

“A ‘gynoid’ distribution is most commonly seen in women. This is what many call the ‘pear’ body shape.
In this pattern, hip circumference is greater than waist circumference.”

Let us break down the numbers for you!

    Fat image

    1. Upper Body Obesity (Android)

This typically means one is eating too much and not exercising enough. Try cutting back on the sweets,
and try exercising for 30 minutes a day. If this does not help, see a healthcare professional.

    2. Stomach-Centered Obesity (Android)

Extra weight in this area can be caused by stress, anxiety or depression.
Pairing exercise and relaxation techniques may be the best method to fix this problem.
Again, seeking the help of a healthcare professional or therapist is advised.

    3. Lower Body Obesity (Gynoid)

This is a common problem for most women. Exercises that incorporate lower-body resistance training,
paired with cardiovascular workouts, are essential to removing this fat issue. This area can be difficult.
Do not hesitate to ask for help.

    4. Swollen Stomach Obesity (Android)

Fat in this area can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption and/or breathing difficulties.
Try to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed and focus on some breathing exercises.
Proper breathing is an entire torso exercise.

    5. Lower Body Obesity that Includes Lower Legs (Gynoid)

This most often occurs in those who are pregnant. The legs may be swelling.
Try water aerobics to take pressure off the leg and feet joints, and sit with the feet raised.

    6. Large, Protruding Stomach with Upper Back Fat (Android)

This is similar to type one in that inactivity causes it. Exercise is vital but so is keeping blood sugar levels stable.
Don’t go too long without eating and try to eat in small increments.

Knowing what is needed for a certain fat issue is key to developing the best method to remove the fat.
However, hormonal and genetic issues should be ruled out or considered if weight loss plans are not working.
A health care professional will be able to help you!

Posted on January 9, 2016 by Wendy

Excellent video from Pennington's that was published Jan 3, 2015 with a fabulous message.
I love it! A must share!!

Body confidence and self-acceptance are topics that have grown in popularity over recent years.
Why? The fact of the matter is that our world is still filled with stigma, stereotypes and unrealistic expectations.
It’s time to reclaim power from a society that thinks we should look or act a certain way based on our appearance.
Instead of trying to change ourselves to fit an arbitrary standard, let’s change perceptions.
As advocates for body diversity and size acceptance, Pennington's want to work with you to create
a new convention: that beauty, strength, and confidence come in different sizes, shapes, and heights.

#iwontcompromise is a movement that celebrates doing what we love, wearing what makes us feel good,
and being who we are without compromise. No limits, no fears, no judgments, just pure enjoyment.
When we hold ourselves back in fear of how we may be perceived, society misses out.
Let them stare. Let them see what we can do. Let’s inspire them together.

  • What if Cinderella had swollen feet

Posted on January 4, 2016 by Wendy

    Happy New Year everyone.

I hope you had a good holidays and got some rest from the hustle and bustle.
The holidays can be very stressful and many of us feel the need to eat comfort food to release
that stress or our grandmothers say eat, eat, eat.

I know many people set goals to lose weight and most of the goals unfortunately don't get accomplished.
The reason being is that we set the goal because we allow what other people think to affect our New Years Resolutions.
I am constantly telling people to learn how to get to their "natural state of weight" and the
fad diets and yo you diets will disappear.

I love this article from Lisa Berry. I couldn't find it on her website however I read this on LinkedIn.
All credit goes to Lisa for this http://www.datingyourdiet.ca/

What If Cinderella had swollen feet??

We all know that the glass slipper fit. We all know that Cinderella lived happily ever after.
BUT what if on the very special day when the ministers came by the house for the girls to try on
the glass slipper Cinderella’s feet were swollen? What if she stuffed her emotions down with food
and hid from all her feelings of low self worth, not fitting in, feeling depressed with her living conditions,
never getting ahead in life? What if bags of potatoes chips, muffins, pasta, and cookies were her answers.
What if chocolate covered avoidance was her go to response?

I’ll share with you what would have happened. The glass slipper would never have fit and Cinderella would
have been left sitting there in the beautiful embroidered Victorian chair with her big old swollen water retention
foot and no prince and no happily ever after.

Imagine just for a moment that your life long dream, a once in a lifetime opportunity literally came to YOU,
right to your door, and you weren’t prepared? What if the decisions you were making, the actions you were taking
were ruining your chance for success? Holding you back from fitting in the exact life that you’d been dreaming of and were trying to create.
Imagine if your life was swollen and didn’t fit into your life’s magical glass slipper?

I remember when the word “success” was defined to me. When I heard it, everything just clicked.

“Success is when preparation meets opportunity”

What does a successful life look like to you?
What is your fairy tale life?
Are you prepared to slide into it like a glass slipper when it shows up?
When the opportunity presents itself to you?
Do you have the mindset that will motivate you into taking actions that propel you into your success?
Are you aware of the power and control you have in your very own life that puts you in the driver seat to choose
what foods you eat, what activities you participate in, what attitude you possess, what language you speak?
Do you realize that it is you who chooses the people in your life? Are you allowing wicked step-sisters and mothers
to dictate your daily activities, negative and hurtful emotions?

Choice is like a fairy godmother. The choices you make are like a granted wish.
That’s why they say… “Be careful of what you wish for”. It’s the same as when I say to myself,
”Lisa, be careful of what you choose, cause that’s what you’ll get.”

So how does one make choices that will get them to their fairy tale life?

How does one prepare so that when they meet opportunity they will have success?

I'm sure the night that Cinderella ran home with only one glass slipper and no prince that she opened
a few kitchen cupboards looking for comfort food. I'm sure she had the phone in her hand wanting to order a pizza.
I bet she even had a secret stash of gummies hiding beside her bed for some sugary satisfaction.
BUT in the end I believe that Cinderella had carefully thought about her decisions before hand.
She had questioned which actions would give her the results she desired and I’m pretty sure she hung onto her dream for a better life,
a free life, and a confidant life. She was aware that having the power to make her own choices,
her own wishes, that she would create the life she wanted.
So instead of eating any of those harmful and smothering foods and waking up with swollen feet,
that night she closed her eyes and laid her head on the pillow and held on tight to her dream of a life happily ever after.

Its all about being prepared for the day when your golden opportunity comes up...being the perfect fit when your life's dreams materialize...
its all about having the mindset and making the decisions that are congruent...that in alignment to what you're trying to create.

I wish you all a Happy New Year - 2016

    Remember to Always Be Fabulous!

    Luv Wendy
